In this article we explore some of the biggest music video hits in Africa that got banned because they went overboard. The banning of all these music videos is not meant to rattle the artists but to protect the younger generation of both the country and continent from unnecessary exposure to the concepts highlighted in the videos. 10. Hallelujah by Diamond Platinumz, Tanzania. Banned Because Of Vulgar Lyrics and Content

The song ‘Hallelujah’ is a dance/electronic single from Diamond Platinumz’s album “A Boy From Tandele released 2018 featuring Morgan Heritage. As soon as the song was released, it drew the attention of the Tanzania regulatory board that placed a ban on the song. The ban on his song ‘Hallelujah’ was not Diamond’s first ban as he has had other bans including also being banned from performing on stage for any concerts at home and abroad. The body that regulates art in the country, Busata, had already banned several songs from the artist including ‘Mwanza’ and Diamond’s defiance of a ban on his songs kept the board in his bad graces. By March 2018, his song ‘Hallelujah’ and ‘Waka’ were also banned on grounds that they are against the country’s norms and values. To add salt to injury, the 29 years old released a video in April of that same year, which showed him playfully kissing a woman which got got him arrested. The authorities also said he was arrested under the premises that the video was deemed to be in breach of the country’s cultural norms. We thought that it will be the last time Diamond gets in trouble as he has been walking on the edge since then still.

9. Ibadi by May D, Nigeria. Banned For Obscene Indecent Content

The song Ibadi by Nigerian artist May D was amongst 15 songs banned by the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission, NBC from being played on local TV channels. The NBC had banned this popular Nigerian song in 2015 for containing vulgar lyrics, obscene videos that show nudity and violence. This brought up some protest from many Nigerian artists as well as fans saying that the NBC was depriving them from artistic freedom rights. Well the song was still fully watched by anyone who wanted to watch it because the ban from being played on local TV channels did not stop the internet from allowing ‘download’ to anyone who cared.
8. Fans Mi by Davido, Nigeria. Banned for Promoting Drugs
In 2015, the National Broadcasting Commission, NBC released a list of Nigeria songs and videos banned for a couple of reasons which included Davido’s Fan Mi video. OAP Yaw Naija shared the list of banned songs on the 18th of August, 2015 with an image tagged with ‘Not To Be Broadcast’ labeled on the list. Of all the songs banned was Davido’s trending ‘Fans Mi’ video featuring American rapper Meek Mill over the use of controversial substance among others. The reasons for the ban of the song included obscene video, trafficking, vulgar lyrics, and violence among others. The ban had the reverse as it made the already trending song a lot more popular.
