Europe’s Stolen African Art

While Benin's experience may have been exceptional due to the scale of destruction and the heritage lost, it accurately represents the routine practice of colonial pillaging of African works of art during the "scramble for Africa," as imperial powers carved up the continent into separate spheres of influence in 1885.

Throughout this period, many prized African artifacts arrived in Western museums via violent conquest. The bronzes were feted as masterpieces but they were presented as the work of inferiors. Should cultural artifacts be returned to their home countries or be left in western museums?
