Though the largest cities in the world might not be in Africa, Africa however has boost of some of the largest cities in the world so without any further delay, here are the Top 10 largest cities in Area by surface area.
10. Dar es Salaam(Tanzania) – Surface Area – 1.590 km2
Dar es Salaam, meaning Place of Peace is the largest city and former capital of Tanzania. With a population of about 6.7 million people, It is the largest city in East Africa and the seventh-largest in Africa in terms of population. Located on the Swahili coast, Dar es-Salaam is an important economic centre and one of the fastest growing cities in the world. However, until 1974, Dar es-Salaam served as Tanzania's capital city, at which point the capital city commenced transferring to Dodoma, by order of then-president Julius Nyerere, which was officially completed in 1996. To proceed, it is Tanzania's most prominent city in arts, fashion, media, music, film and television, and is a leading financial centre. The city is the leading arrival and departure point for most tourists who visit Tanzania, including the national parks for safaris and the islands of Unguja and Pemba. With a surface area of about 1.590 km2, Dar es Salaam is the 10th largest city in Africa and it is larger than Seychelles and Sao Tomé and Princhipe
9. Johannesburg( South Africa) – Surface Area – 1.645km2
Johannesburg informally known as Jozi, Joburg, or "The City of Gold", is the largest city in South Africa and one of the 50 largest urban areas in the world. It is the provincial capital and largest city of Gauteng, which is the wealthiest province in South Africa. Johannesburg is the seat of the Constitutional Court, the highest court in South Africa. However, the city is located in the mineral-rich Witwatersrand range of hills and is the centre of large-scale gold and diamond trade. It was one of the host cities of the official tournament of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The metropolis is an alpha global city with a population of 5.6 million as of 2019 making it the most populous city in South Africa. 8. Abuja(Nigeria) – Surface Area – 1.769 km2
Abuja is the capital city of Nigeria located in the centre of the country within the Federal Capital Territory. It is a planned city and was built mainly in the 1980s replacing the country's most populous city of Lagos as the capital on 12 December 1991. Abuja's geography is defined by Aso Rock, a 400-metre monolith left by water erosion
According to the United Nations,is one of the fastest growing city in the world with a population of 3.2 million as of 2019, the city is experiencing an annual growth of at least 35%, retaining its position as the fastest-growing city on the African continent and one of the fastest-growing in the world. It has beautiful sites such as the Nigerian National Mosque and the Nigerian National Christian Centre. The city is served by the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport. Abuja is known for being one of the few purpose-built capital cities in Africa, as well as being one of the wealthiest.
