Manchester United have sacked head coach Ruben Amorim after just 14 months in charge, following a turbulent spell at Old Trafford. Less than 24 hours after a tense 1–1 draw with Leeds United and public criticism of the club’s hierarchy, United confirmed Amorim’s departure as the club sits sixth in the Premier League.

Former United midfielder Darren Fletcher will take interim charge for Wednesday’s Premier League clash against Burnley, marking his first senior managerial role. Amorim’s entire coaching staff have also left the club.

Amorim won 25 of 63 matches, spent £216m on new signings, and recorded some of the worst defensive and win-rate statistics of any Manchester United manager in the Premier League era. His 14-month spell is the shortest permanent managerial reign since David Moyes in 2014.

With the FA Cup third-round tie against Brighton approaching, questions remain over United’s long-term direction and who could be next in the Old Trafford dugout.
